Welcome
Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

Copyright status: File:Crowd gathers at Soldier Field to listen to a marching band.jpg
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Crowd gathers at Soldier Field to listen to a marching band.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Thanks for uploading File:Crowd gathers at Soldier Field to listen to a marching band.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Crowd gathers at Soldier Field to listen to a marching band.jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

Foreign Secretaries
Categorising Foreign Secretaries or their equivalents as "national leaders" does not make sense, the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs is not the leader of the nation. This is not the normal pattern of categorisation, for example Category:Barack Obama with national leaders has sub-categories for other heads of government or equivalent, not other high-ranking ministers or officials. January (talk) 08:42, 7 September 2016 (UTC)
Yes, however Hillary has an extensive number of images taken with certain ministers and cabinet-level members of governments, both domestic and foreign (for instance, it seems that she may happen to appear in more images with US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates than she even appears in with her own husband, former US President Bill Clinton). It seems necessary to divide many of these into their own categories to help streamline access to media, more so than it might with other politicians.
Being a Secretary of State, one of Clinton's main tasks was meeting with foreign politicians and domestic defense leaders. While these are also duties a President often fulfills, it is does not make-up the same bulk of the job as it does for a Secretary of State. Especially since Obama had delegated much of the foreign-policy to Hillary, as he needed to focus on economic recovery from the recession as well as passing healthcare legislation. Holding office in the 2010's made it so that a vast number of images documenting her tenure were made available online, and thus found their way onto commons.
Therefore, it makes little sense to categorize these images in a non-descriptive manner. Having hundreds of essentially unsorted images is not a proper standard.
SecretName101 (talk) 08:52, 7 September 2016 (UTC)
If you would like, perhaps, we could create additional subcategories for cabinet-level officials of nations. However, it would make sense to first have these images sorted by nationality of the leaders before breaking them down even further.SecretName101 (talk) 08:56, 7 September 2016 (UTC)
- Yes, I think that's a good idea (my only issue was with applying the term "national leader" too broadly). My suggestion would be dividing first by country (eg Category:Hillary Rodham Clinton with politicians of the United Kingdom, and from there dividing by office or rank (eg Category:Hillary Rodham Clinton with Foreign Secretaries of the United Kingdom or Category:Hillary Rodham Clinton with Cabinet ministers of the United Kingdom. January (talk) 10:29, 7 September 2016 (UTC)
- Certainly. Once I've made more significant headway with dividing leaders by nations, I will work on doing that. You are welcome to start it at any point if you want to take the lead there.SecretName101 (talk) 10:31, 7 September 2016 (UTC)

Wikimedia Commons does not accept derivative works of non-free works such as File:2016 DNC - Chloe Grace Moretz (cropped).jpeg. It only accepts free content, which is images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Reproductions of copyrighted works are also subject to the same copyright, and therefore this file must unfortunately be considered non-free. For more information, please read Commons:Derivative works and Commons:Freedom of panorama. You can ask questions about Commons policies in Commons:Help desk.
The file you added will soon be deleted. If you believe this file is not a derivative work of a non-free work, please explain why on the file's talk page.

Welcome, Dear Filemover!
Hi SecretName101, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:
- Use the CommonsDelinker link in the Rename template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
- Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
- Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

File:Breaking News- Cam Newton's smirk missing from Super Bowl 50. -SB50 (24869068596).jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Copyright status: File:Brad Marchand Cfac101 (5216504227).jpg
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Brad Marchand Cfac101 (5216504227).jpg.
Thank you. |

Tons of crops
Hi SecretName101, what is your motivitaion to upload tons of (currently unused) crops of existing media files ? Xgeorg (talk) 13:45, 28 March 2017 (UTC)
Wikimedia commons serves as a public-domain image repository. It not only benefits Wikimedia sites, but also benefits outside projects. Individuals are able to utilize images which they find on Wikimedia Commons elsewhere. Thus "unused" is somewhat a misnomer, as images that are not in-use on Wikimedia may be used elsewhere. Additionally, images often may serve a future-use as Wikimedia projects expands with newly-created or newly-expanded articles.
Anyways, one reason I do this is to allow for a greater variety of options. Often times it is to create a new file which focuses-in on a particular individual or object in an image, or a particular region of a photograph.SecretName101 (talk) 22:49, 28 March 2017 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk. There are at least 16 others that also need categorization. Elisfkc (talk) 15:19, 2 May 2017 (UTC)

Selfies
Hello. The utility of Wikimedia is to show images of the world. I'm sure if it's right to have selfies there; for the Parthenon a special category "selfies" has been created. When someone wants to see pictures of this monument, I don't think that person looks for selfies, anyway that special category is there in case of. This is just my point of view. I just realized you have changed the Bill Clinton pic, I wonder why. Regards.--Io Herodotus (int:Talkpagelinktext) 09:34, 1 July 2017 (UTC)
- It is not a selfie. A selfie is a photo one has taken of themselves. He does not appear to be the photographer of that image, and therefore it cannot be called a selfie.SecretName101 (int:Talkpagelinktext) 18:38, 1 July 2017 (UTC)
- OK. I haven't thought of that. What would be the proper name then?--Io Herodotus (int:Talkpagelinktext) 01:15, 2 July 2017 (UTC)
- Perhaps something like "Images of people at....." or "Images of individuals at...." or Photographs of people at..... I agree that those sorts of pictures probably should not be uploaded for the Parthenon with unimportant figures. However, that particular image (being of a United States President) should certainly be retained. It could serve a potential use as an appropriate illustration for articles and stories discussing US relations with Greece.SecretName101 (int:Talkpagelinktext)
- I took the liberty of replacing that category with Category:Images of individuals at the Parthenon.
Additionally, if a category had been created to contain actual selfies (which are basically the photographic equivalent of a self-portrait), it should have been titled "Selfies at the Parthenon", not "Selfies of the Parthenon". Think about it, the relation such images would have with the Parthenon is that they were taking there. The Parthenon would be the location, not the subject (the Parthenon could not possibly be the subject of a selfie, being an inanimate entity it is impossible for it to take a picture of itself), thus the selfie would be at the Parthenon rather than of the Parthenon. SecretName101 (int:Talkpagelinktext) 03:05, 2 July 2017 (UTC)- Thank you, I totally agree with you. Categories for José Bové
Hi, Beware not to create too many categories. For File:José Bové in 2007.jpg, Category:José Bové in 2007 and Category:José Bové in French presidential election (2007) are redondant. And now how do we find a good portrait of José Bové? It would be much more appropriate to create Category:Portraits of José Bové and Category:Interviews of José Bové, etc. Regards, Yann (int:Talkpagelinktext) 08:18, 5 July 2017 (UTC)

Unblock request
Template:Unblock granted I do not understand the severity of disruption I have caused to be major.
By my calculation (looking back through my talk page) about 100 images I have uploaded were deleted. A handful were items that had been misidentified elsewhere as commons-licensed. By my calculation 37 of those deleted were for reasons not relating to copyright (poor quality, out-of-scope, usurped by a higher-quality version, etc). And looking back, it appears that at least one or two of those that were deleted for copyright should not have been. For instance, File:President Clinton Eating at Various Locations - FOIA Case - 2011-0068-F.webm has since been re-uploaded as File:President Clinton Eating at Various Locations - (FOIA Case - 2011-0068-F).webm.
However, let us presume that 100 files I uploaded have been deleted for copyright. I have uploaded 41,790 files to commons thus-far. This would mean that in totality a mere 0.24% of the files I have uploaded have been deleted for copyright violations.
The learning curve I have endured (and am still enduring) as I become more and more involved in Wikimedia Commons and its nuances has resulted in only a minute number of copyright violations in relation to the totality of the files I have contributed. While I have admittedly made some significant mistakes, misjudgments and oversights in regards to judging or identifying copyright, the number of these mistakes is ranks incredibly small out of the totality of my contributions.
In the time before December 2015 I had only contributed a mere three images. Therefore, I consider my experience as a regular uploader to have begun in December 2015. I have, therefore, only been contributing files for less than 21-months.
I have typically learned from each of my errors, and I rarely commit the same exact mistakes again. I typically tend to learn relatively quickly which nuances I may have unintentionally violated.
However, going forward, I intend to take greater due-diligence in my contributions of media.SecretName101 (int:Talkpagelinktext) 03:24, 15 August 2017 (UTC)

- I feel I have a better grasp of the concept of threshold of originally. Still a very finicky legal concept, as it is so vaguely defined. However, the key question tends to be whether there is anything that is actually unique to the forms. If there is anything that can be argued to demonstrate unique artistic effort, then it crosses the line. For instance, a simple arc-shape is below the threshold, but a detailed geometric representation of the Arc de Triumph would presumably be above it (thus ineligible for free use without being otherwise licensed as such). Maps, unless based off of public-domain/free maps, are copyrighted unless their copyright has expired/ failed to be renewed (depending on date of origin). If simple forms can reasonably be presumed to have been laid in the same formation before, then they are not eligible for copyright. However, if a graphic is complex enough that its composition is reasonably unique, then that is not the case.
I have found that the most bizarre (but exciting) aspect of this is the lack of overlap between copyright and trademark in many instances. SecretName101 (int:Talkpagelinktext) 00:15, 7 September 2017 (UTC)
